The EU `must become even more powerful' according to speakers at the CBI conference

The European Union is essential to the success of British companies because it is bringing down barriers to trade and enabling global trade negotiations, according to Romano Prodi, president of the European Commission. Speaking at the CBI conference last month, Prodi argued: "The EU is about strength. By this we mean power worldwide -- participating in the union boosts the influence of every member state in world affairs."

While he admitted that British companies are most concerned with prosperity, Prodi argued that expanding the EU will improve business prospects across Europe. "The EU is the largest single market in the world and creating this market was a unique achievement," he said. "It has provided levels of prosperity past generations could only dream of."

Prodi criticised the UK media for portraying the single market as a source of interference and unnecessary rules and regulations. "That is not true. The single market removed national boundaries and, in doing so, it brought down barriers to trade -- often at British insistence," he argued. "The rules are the key to jobs, wealth and new opportunities for British employers and employees in all sectors of the economy...
