Background
The Ann Craft Trust (ACT) was founded by the late Dr Ann
Craft in 1992 and began its life as the National Association for
the Protection from Sexual Abuse of Adults and Children with
Learning Disabilities (NAPSAC). Dr Craft had pioneered work
that looked at the rights of people with learning disabilities in
relation to their sexuality during the 1970s. She worked
directly with staff and service users and had a major impact on
the lives of people with learning disabilities.
She further recognised the importance of considering
protection issues and the need to balance independence and
protection, risks and rights. She raised the profile of protection
of children and adults and founded NAPSAC to offer those
working in the field the information and skills required to
minimise the risk of abuse. Dr Craft died in 1997 and
NAPSAC was re-launched as the Ann Craft Trust in 1998 in
recognition of her enormous contribution to this work.
ACT works with staff in the statutory, independent and
voluntary sectors in the interests of people with learning
disabilities who may be at risk of abuse. The underlying
philosophy of ACT is that people with learning disabilities
have a right not to be abused and have a right to recourse
when they have been abused. Many adults and children with
learning disabilities are unable to access services themselves.
ACT offers the information, advice and guidance necessary to
support an individual to feel protected and respected and is
available to professionals working with people with learning
disabilities. It provides a number of key services to raise
awareness of the abuse of people with learning disabilities,
including advice and information, publications, research,
training, consultancy and awareness raising campaigns.
The work of the Ann Craft Trust
A wide range of individuals including the police, health
professionals, direct support staff, social care professionals,
parents and carers use ACT services. It responds to their needs
and concerns in the following ways.
