Electronic resources
The Higher Colleges of Technology
(HCT) subscribes to various electronic
resources. HCT has recently engaged in
a benchmarking exercise with leading
Higher EducationInstitutions around the
globe. The benchmarking exercise
assisted the HCT library to have a clear
picture of the possible gaps in its e-
collections. Equally important is return
on investment, therefore marketing is
crucial to ensure optimal use. Librarians
are promoting electronic resources
through hands-on Information Literacy
sessions throughout the year, facilitating
encouraging BYOD (Bring Your Own
Device) and through different settings
(in classrooms, groups in the library,
classroom setting in the library, one to
one in the library). HCT e-resources
are accessible 24/7/365 on and off
campus on any device as long as
patrons have internet access. Displays
of PowerPoint presentations on library
video monitors, handouts, posters are
leveraged marketing tools. Quick
response (QR) codes introduced on
different media are used to enable
students/staff direct access to e-library
items. Patrons are encouraged to take
part from the trial phase of electronic
resources to ensure program appropriate
content are acquired. COUNTER,
SUSHI and Google Analytics reports
are generated regularly to monitor usage
statistics of the e-resources subscribed
to.
For HCT to have a higher return on
investment, its e-resources are marketed
through information literacy sessions,
LibGuides, posters and PowerPoint
presentations. Students conduct various
types of research using these resources
during their work in the library, which
improves their research skills.
Throughout the year students/faculty/
staff are trained on selected resources as
per the annual training plan. These
training sessions are through Webinars,
face-to-faceworkshops, one on one walk
in sessions as well. The HCT 2.0 Virtual
Library vision is to embed these resources
through courses offered through the
BlackBoard Course Management System.
Doing this will prepare HCT students/
faculty/staff to use these resources on the
go. Special face-to-face workshops are
organized to train students/faculty how
to use apps and software to access/
download these resources on their
mobile devices. Regular sessions are
offered to raise awareness among staff/
faculty/student on legal and ethical
issues related to information used from
various platforms used by publishers.
Many faculty have their research
papers published in journals that are
online which inspire the students to
write and publish their own research
papers. HCT practice as an applied
institutionwithappliedresearchande-
resources are supportive of this. Most
of the e-resources available from the
HCT library webpage address users’
needs with impairments.
