Australia is in fact home to some of the world's oldest shiraz vines, with vineyards dating back to 1843.Warm climates usually produce full-bodied, richly flavoured and textured wines, while cooler climates like Coonawarra generally make medium-bodied and spicy styles

Aussie winemakers have been innovating by picking grapes earlier and using less oak, resulting in lighter fresher wines showing true regional expression.

A typical example will be a beautiful deep ruby purple colour with ripe juicy red fruit and peppercorn aromas, medium to full-bodied with flavours of blueberry and blackberry with ripe tannins and spicy notes.

Shiraz is a perfect match with meat. Roast beef or lamb are good matches with mature restrained styles whereas barbecued ribs, spicy sausages and rich stews pair well with young wines. All styles are great with cheese.

See below for some reasonably priced examples which will help warm a winter's evening.
