JACKENGLISH &RICHARDCARD. Butterworths Police Law. Soft
cover £18.50.
The third edition of this fine book by a retired police officer and an
academic lawyer updates the previous edition and presents the law as it
stood on November 1,1990, although some changes up toJanuary 1,1991,
have been inserted. These include the revised versions
of
the Codes of
Practice made under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, 1984, which
came into force on April 1, 1991; the provisions of the Road Traffic
(DriverLicensing and Information Systems) Act, 1989, which came into
force on the same day.and the provisions
of
the Children Act, 1989,which
are expected to be brought into force in late 1991.
The book was originally written to fill the gap left by the exit
of
'Moriarty' - the policeman's book on Police Law - but all the indications
are that Butterworths Police
Law
is a worthy successor. Its presentquality
augurs well for the future and reliance on the name
of
Moriarty should be
a thing of the past.
Blackstone's Criminal Practice. Editor-in-Chief Peter Murphy, MA,
LLB. Hard cover (boxed) price £95.
Published as a rival to Archbold, for the first time in 169 years, this tome
of over 2,000 pages deals comprehensively, as far as is practicable, with
all the law, evidence and procedure practitioners need to know. It is a
single volume of manageable size and expense and will appear annually
in February, the second edition appearing in 1992.
A well cross-referenced volume, it bears out the editors' intentions to
include everything necessary from a practical perspective to the everyday
work of the practitioner. Items of minor importance are omitted, such as
offences under the Factories Act, licensing laws and immigration statutes,
to create space for a thorough treatment
of
all the material which is truly
essential to criminal practice, and much besides that is useful and
informative.
It
combinesthe academic with the practical in such a way as to satisfy
practitioners
of
all levels and must be classed as a welcome newcomer to
the 'judicial" scene.
Blackstone's Annual Updates. £10.95 paperback.

and commercial publications, and puts them in their practical context.
BARBARA MITCHELS. Child Care Law.
No statutes were passed on this subject during 1990, but preparation is
proceeding for the implementation of the Children Act of 1989. The
author takes a brief look at the contents
of
consultation papers and draft
