when faced with the choice of having either to
make
the volume larger
or
to cut
out
interesting material. Nevertheless, though the author's
thorough
work has resulted in a more efficient text book, his deletions have
had
the
inevitable effect of removing some of the personality
from
the
text.
The
work is, however, essentially an expanded version of the
sound
structure built by Professor
Potter
and,
for
the serious student, remains a
work of the utmost value which has the advantage of being up to date.
A.M.
GAVIN
THURSTON:
Coroner's Practice. Butterworh. 21s.
THE
ASSOCIATION
between the Police and the
Coroner
is really a very close
one; both are concerned with unexpected death, cases where
the
cause of
death is not known, or where it 'is due to violence, in order to clear up
whether it is accidental or felonious. Until the cause of death is satisfactorily
cleared up, there must always remain the possibility of it being
due
to
homicide. With very few exceptions in this country, it is the Police who
make
the enquiries, providing the necessary information
for
the
Coroner
to
act upon. Once this fact is appreciated, it will be realised how valuable it
must be to have areference
book
available to those connected with
Coroner's
duties.
Mr.
Coroner
Thurston, in the preface to his book, says
that
it is intended
to be a simple outline of Coroner's practice. He points out
that
Jervis on
Coroners is, of course, the standard text-book, but hopes
that
his effort will
be of use to senior Police Officers, Doctors and others who have an interest
in
Coroner's
work.
The
author, in a lucid, easy style, illustrates in
broad
outline how
the
Coroner
deals with cases which
come
under
his jurisdiction. Mr.
Thurston
emphasises
many
of his points by giving invaluable examples of
actual
cases.
The
chapter
dealing with common causes of
natural
unexpected death is
particularly valuable.
The
causes and effects of the most
common
of these
are
explained very carefully,
and
it is a pleasure to find
that
someone has
at last produced a
book
which explains not only by simple language
but
also by diagrams so very clearly some of the medical terms which the
Coroner
and his officers so frequently come across in practice.
It
is a pity,
perhaps,
that
there are
not
a few
more
of these illustrations.
While the
author
delves
rather
deeply at times into statistics, they are
nevertheless very interesting, and give a good idea, not only of
the
com-
monest causes of death in
Coroner's
cases, but also some of the reasons. He
also gives the most frequent causes of suicide, the causes of falls
and
the
types of injuries one usually expects to find in these cases; and also
how
complications following
upon
injuries may subsequently bring
about
the
death of the deceased.
One of the
many
good things
about
this
book
is
that
it instructs
the
Police Officer who is conducting the investigation and preparing
the
case for the
Coroner
in the different matters which have to be covered,
in'
order
that
the
Coroner
can come to a decision as to whether to
hold
an
Inquest or
not;
and
where it is decided to hold an Inquest, the types of
witnesses which will be required.
While some Coroners may
not
entirely agree with all
that
is in this book,
in general this refers to matters of opinion which do
not
in any way detract
from its value.
Not
only will senior Police Officers find this
book
interesting and useful,
but it should be invaluable to all Police Officers who act as Coroner's
Officers. G.B.

THE
FACT
that
a
book
first published in 1819 is still a standard work of
reference is a tribute to the inspiration
that
promoted
not
only the first
but
each of the subsequent editions of the book. In the course of 140 years
ten editions have succeeded each other and now comes the eleventh.
