Residents object to Irish Centre's plans to host large events

One local resident told licencing committee councillors he had 'no confidence' in the Irish Centre, and asked for its application to host large events per year to be refused.

He was joined by several other local residents and local Coun Mike Leddy, and had concerns including the noise impact and a lack of appropriate parking in the area.

However a representative for the Irish Centre said that there is no substantive reason why the licence should not be granted, and pointed to the lack of objections from either West Midlands Police or Environmental Health as evidence that permission should be given.

The Irish Centre, which relocated to Kings Heath from the city centre in 2020, is applying for a licence to host three events a year with as many as 9,999 attendees at a nearby sports field on Wheelers Lane.

One objector said: "I'm a resident that lives probably the width of the roadway from the site in question, and already, talking of noise, we have the Irish Centre who had a live band outside until 10pm last week, and I already have residents complaining about the noise.

"So with the Irish Centre as it is, there are problems with noise and nuisance as well. And this has been very evident in the past month or so since lockdown finished. Already I have no confidence in what goes on there...
