Resurfacing work scheme under way

Some 31 roads are set to benefit from both patching and resurfacing in the next few months, with all work due to be completed by March 2023

In the last financial year, 26 roads benefitted from the scheme, the work having been brought forward from this year's list.

Last year, Stockton Council's cabinet agreed to commit £400,000 of one-off COVID recovery monies to the additional work, and in February, an additional £200,000 a year was targeted at carriageway improvements for the next two years.

A recent scrutiny review revealed the council faced a £4m shortfall in funding for the area's highways infrastructure last year, as well as having to contend with the rising cost of materials.

Cllr Mike Smith, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "We know the upkeep of the borough's roads is very important to our residents and we are fully committed to improving our roads.

"But we'd like to do more, and although it's a priority for us we simply don't receive enough funding to embark on the kind of widespread improvement programme we'd like to see.

"In fact, there isn't a council in the country that has the funding to catch-up on its entire road maintenance...
