I was surprised to read recently that the Russell Group of "top UK universities" has blacklisted A-level subjects it perceives as "soft", including business studies, ICT, law and accounting. This is perplexing, because some of its members have business schools and offer accounting degrees. I have a PhD in accounting from one such university (Warwick).

I have worked in higher education since 1987, delivering degree courses in accounting, and have often encountered a misplaced academic arrogance towards the subject. Academics with no depth of knowledge in accountancy and finance allege that accounting is simple, lacks intellectual rigour and is too vocational. This is complete tosh. Accounting is...
