I was interested to read Mike Brooks's article on hostile takeovers ("Crying foul", December/ January 2007/08). Over my 20-year career in the finance departments of a good number of organisations I have had various experiences of changes in management, including privatisations, mergers and outright takeovers. Although many of these were interesting and instructive, I must admit that a certain amount of hostility was felt even at the best of times.

When the new directors enter the scene, more often than not they give the impression that the existing executives (including managers at more junior levels) have been doing a lousy job. I have seen forms of hostility ranging from "let us show you how to run the business" to "whatever you did was wrong and we're here to put it right".
