THE first case in which an oxy-acetylene blowpipe was
used in the British Isles for the purpose of safe-breaking,
occurred in the City of Birmingham in September,
1910.
A
firm of manufacturing jewellers and diamond mounters occu-
pied premises in the centre of the jewellery quarter in Bir-
mingham. There were void premises next door, and one day
a man called upon the owner (an elderly man whose eyesight
was not good) to take over the tenancy, explaining that he was
going to start the manufacture of silver-backed hair brushes.
References were given which were never inquired into at the
time, and which afterwards proved false.
Thus
the keys of
these void premises were obtained.
During the following week several packing cases were
delivered at these premises, some of these cases being very
heavy. It subsequently transpired that all these cases had
been brought from London by taxi-cab in order that they
should not be traced to the sender through any railwaycom-
pany. These packing cases were subsequently found to have
contained one

ft. cylinder of oxygen, a

ft. cylinder of
acetylene, many yards of armoured piping to convey the oxy-
gen, rubber tubing to convey the acetylene, an oxy-acetylene
blowpipe with two nozzles, an electric accumulator with con-
necting wires to fix up a portableelectric torch, a quantity of
jemmies, levers, rubber gloves,an electric bell-push and buzzer
