“Failed” migratory adventures? Malian men facing conditions post deportation in Southern Mali offers some ground-breaking
analysis specific to the research topic of deportation studies. Divided into eight chapters, the book's main argument
centres on tracing the failed migratory experienced of Malian males deportation from Europe and North Africa. It
analyses the dynamics involved in the failed migrations of these men back in Mali as they are trying to cope with
the unfulfilled dream of reaching Europe. One of the key concepts that helps to understand the unfulfilled migration
dream is the idea of having to return to Mali empty-handed, a sentiment that serves to explain why deportation
is a such difficult experience—why going back without fulfilling one's migratory dream can cause emotional and
economic difficulties for both the deportee and the economic-dependent community and family left behind.
The book sets out five ways to help understand the impacts of being deported upon the Malian men. First, in
context of Mali, where a large percentage of the population is dependent on remittances, a failed migratory adven-
ture can have devastating economic consequences for families and communities as well as emotional. The book
outlines the strong connection between such economic loss and the emotional difficulties experienced explaining
this connection in a thorough manner.
Second, the study does a clear job in exposing the consequences of European Union externalization measures,
centring on the inhuman obstruction of migratory movements coming from North Africa, measures that often lead
to unprecedented suffering and, in many cases, migrant deaths. As such the book provides a good road map of the
different geographical intersections that migrants encounter before reaching European soil, in particular the obsta-
cles faced in North Africa before a Mediterranean crossing is ventured. In many cases, North African countries not
only operate as a buffer zone, but they also end up being destination countries by default, places where migrants
wait in limbo and face all kinds of abuses. The migration journey is long and dominated by uncertainties and illusions.
Third, the book outlines the suffering that deportees endure after being deported back to Mali. Highlighted is the
fact that suffering is not only related to the journey itself but is also related to getting re-adjusted to a “new” life upon
returning to Mali, often without any resources available to the deportees. The important aspect to note here is unmet
expectations and shuttered dreams in which the concept of “coming back with empty hands” is particularly trauma-
tising. Coming home with nothing to show is crucial to understanding the main argument of the book as well as the
reluctance of the deportees to start life again, especially considering the financial loss that comes with not making it
to their final destination, instead being deported. Despite the disappointment of coming home with empty-handed,
however, the tenacity and perseverance possessed by migrants, often against all odds, is also demonstrated. Some
