SCOPUS reflected study of selected research
and higher education institutions (HEIs) of
Chandigarh: a city of education and research
Rupak Chakravarty and Deepti Madaan
Introduction
Our institutions have been exploring
new domains of research areas in their
respective fields and sharing their works
internationally by publishing in quality
journals. Therefore, through this study, an
effort has been made to assess the growth
of publications by these institutions with
respect to the quality and quantity of
publications in peer-reviewed journals.
The present study takes into account the
research productivity in seven major
academic institutes of Chandigarh as
revealed by Scopus and caters to
following objectives.
Objectives:
To analyze the research productivity
of Chandigarh.
To find out the top five most
productive authors from seven
city-based institutes.
To have an insight into the most
cited papers.
To find out the affiliations of
city-based scholars at national and
international levels.
To identify other nations with whom
city-based scholars preferred to
collaborate.
To determine the types of documents
preferred, in which maximum research
findings have been published.
Methodology and data source
The present study reviews the
publication output from 1964 to 2014.
The publication data were procured from
Scopus, which is an international
multi-disciplinary bibliographical database
covering 53m records, more than 20,000
titles and 5,000 publishers. Database search
was undertaken on May 22nd, 2014, and
results were downloaded under various
headings like year, author, publications,
document type, affiliations and
collaborations with other nations. The
whole data were exported to MS-Excel
format from Scopus. Data of 160 authors
were retrieved on the basis of at least one
author affiliated to a research institution in
Chandigarh.
The study was conducted by
focusing on top seven institutes of
Chandigarh engaged in diverse fields.
These are Panjab University (PU),
Post Graduate Institute of Medical
Education and Research (PGIMER),
Govt. Medical College and Hospital
(GMCH), Punjab Engineering
College (PEC), University Institute of
Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS),
Institute of Microbial Technology
(IMTECH) and Central Scientific
Instruments Organization (CSIO).
Although UIPS is an integral part of
Panjab University, Scopus has treated
it as a separate institution and so have
the researchers.
The researchers have used simple
percentile method to find out the growth
in research output of these institutes in six
decades covering the period from 1964 to
the first quarter of 2014, collaborations
with other nations and affiliations with
other institutes. Taking into consideration
the number of publications, their citations
and h index, the researchers have tried to
find out the most productive authors from
these institutes.
Although the research process in
Panjab University was started early in
1926, as revealed by Scopus, to maintain
the uniformity with the research process
initiated by other institutes, the authors
have taken 1964 as the year of initiation
of data analysis for writing this paper.
Each institute has research publications in
more than 20 diverse subject areas. Due
to this diversity, data could not be
analyzed under specific subject areas.
To study the research output for the
past 50 years and the current year, the
authors have divided the years into five
decades and additional few months of
2014.
Data analysis of research output
results and discussion
The data retrieved from Scopus are
displayed below in form and figures to
make it more effective and convenient to
analyze.
Table I indicates that research output has
been on upswing with every passing
decade. Panjab University tops among the
other institutes of Chandigarh in the first
decade, that is, 1964-1973. However, if we
see the overall growth since 1964, then
there is a phenomenal growth of research
publications of PGI from 157publications
in 1964 to 7,395 in the decade 2004-2013.
Panjab University also shows remarkable
growth in research publications from 333
publications in 1964-1973 to 5,012 in the
past decade 2004-2013. We can observe the
research output of GMCH and IMTECH
beginning from 1984-1993 which gained
momentum from 69.1 per cent in
2004-2013 in GMCH and 61.8 per cent in
IMTECH. Though the quantity of research
output is meager in both the institutions,
there has been an increasing trend in the
research activity of both the institutes.
Established in 1994, UIPS has also shown
impressive growth in terms of research
productivity. Starting with 342 publications
in 1994-2003, the output jumped to 855
publications from 2004 to 2013. The
research activity is gathering pace in the
ongoing year of 2014 also. Keeping pace
with this increasing trend, CSIO has also
been contributing. Beginning from 10
publications in 1964-1973, the number
swelled to 263 from 2004-2013. Similarly,
PEC is also on the same track with 14
publications in 1964-1973 and attaining the
number 211 in 2004-2013.
