Abstract
Purpose Building upon Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and Social Internet of Things
(SIoT), Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV) is the latest development in the field. SIoV allows vehicles to socialize
among themselves and share information of common interests. The increasing popularity of the SIoV concept
demands more research to explore its great potential. However, very few studies have systemically
investigated this concept to provide a comprehensive view for readers. The paper aims to discuss this issue.
Design/methodology/approach This paper discusses the perspectives of the utilizations and limitations
of SIoV, setting forward a systematic and epistemological framework.
Findings The authors summarize the benefits of SIoV from four information-management perspectives:
safety management, traffic control and convenience, productivity improvement and commercialization and
exploring the factors inhibiting the development of SIoV from the following seven aspects: standardization,
adaptability, scalability, infrastructure, lack of application, privacy and security.
Originality/value The paper lays a solid foundation for researchers to find possible solutions to address
the challenges to SIoV and provides valuable insights for practitioners who are interested in adopting
SIoV initiatives.

1. Introduction
The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm has led us to a new era of computing that expands to
include billions of new types of devices (Xu et al., 2014). Based on the idea of integrating
everyday smart objects equipped with sensors to the Internet, IoT allows heterogeneous
objects to communicate with each other to provide ubiquitous services, opening a new vista
of possibilities in different industries, such as healthcare (Islam et al., 2015), libraries
(Wójcik, 2016), manufacturing (Bi et al., 2014; Tao et al., 2014), pharmaceutics (Liu and Jia,
2011) and retailing (Lee and Lee, 2015). This pervasiveness is enabled by sensors that can
detect surrounding physical phenomenon and actuate different tasks accordingly. Cloud
computing-based infrastructure facilitates the collection and analysis of the data generated
by these sensors, enabling applications and end-to-end services.
Incorporating consciousness in the IoT framework, the Social Internet of Things (SIoT)
concept envisions the integration of social networking among the IoT devices (Atzori et al.,
2012). These devices can socialize with each other and create social circles based on mutual
interests and goals. The application of social networking re-uses the existing social network
models and addressessome specific IoT issues such as scalability and adaptabilityso that the
IoT devices can build trust-based relationships and leverage them for service provisioning.
The social dimensionof SIoT enables the feasibility of managingthe ever-growing number of
devices in IoT.
Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is an emerging concept derived from its parentIoT domain. The
idea of IoV refers to the dynamic mobile communication between vehicles, infrastructure,
