Team Mouat have already defeated world champions Sweden in the roundrobin stage, the 7-6 win securing their place in the semi-finals.

They followed that up with wins over the Russian Olympic Committee and Canada to finish top of the group with a fine record of eight wins and one defeat.

On Thursday afternoon they faced the USA in the last four.

And in a thrilling encounter, they won 8-4 to progress to the final and guarantee themselves a medal.

The women's team hit trouble when they were surprisingly beaten by China on Wednesday, leaving them with a record of four wins and four defeats.

On Thursday, they kept their hopes alive by beating the Russian Olympic Committee 9-4 in their final game.

However, they still required other results to go their way to progress.

And luck was on their side, with wins for Sweden, Canada and Switzerland seeing them through to the last four where they meet Sweden later today.

football elgin 0 annan 2 Annan boss Peter Murphy savoured their 2-0 midweek win at Elgin and hoped his Galabankies take the winning form into tomorrow's League Two clash with Edinburgh City.

Lewis Hunter hit the sixth minute

opener and Owen Moxon fired in the second before the break after latching onto a free-kick by Aidan Smith.

Murphy said: "I made five changes for the game because the Rangers cup

tie on the Saturday had left a lot of them mentally and physically tired.

"And when Lewis came in and scored it shows that he was proving that I should not have left him out of the Rangers game, which is good.

"Also back in from the start with Kyle Fleming, Michael Garrity, Tommy Goss and Steven Swinglehurst."

It was an important win for the Galabankies in the promotion race as rivals Edinburgh City lost 2-1 at home to Albion Rovers while Forfar slipped up with a 1-1 draw against Stirling Albion.

Murphy added: "It has been a long week and we didn't get back from Elgin until the early hours. I got home between 4.30am and 5am then had to be back up for work at 8.30am.

"The Edinburgh City game will be tough. Their manager Gary Naysmith has recruited really well after a turn over of players and after losing in midweek they will want to get back to winning ways.

"So we are looking to another very competitive match."
