SSAB (STO:SSABA) (HEL:SSABBH), a Nordic and US-based steel company, announced on Friday that it is planning to implement a new Nordic production system and bring forward its green transition.
This decision by the board of directors was taken against the background of strongly growing demand for fossil-free steel.
The plan is to replace the existing strip production system with new mini-mill technology, resulting in a broader product programme and improved cost position. The ambition is to largely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions around 2030, 15 years earlier than previously announced, SSAB said. However, to achieve this ambition, the necessary infrastructure including access to fossil-free electricity must be in place in time.
