Station could be in line for fifth platform

A fifth platform could be developed at Leicester railway station as part of long-term improvements.

The move has been a key feature of talks between rail bosses and council officials as they have been working on a plan to radically revamp the Victorian-built travel terminal in London Road.

The city council has drawn up plans for a £22 million scheme to create a new square outside the railway station and intends to 'spin' the station entrance round from London Road to Station Street.

This would allow the taxi rank to be relocated from the port cochere entrance to that side of the station, freeing up the entrance hall for new bars, cafes and restaurants.

If a recently submitted bid to the Government's Levelling Up succeeds, the city council hopes it would be just the first phase of a much more comprehensive revamp of the area around the station, which unlocks the possibility of more train services from a new platform. The city council's director of tourism, culture and investment, Mike Dalzell, said: "We are planning a quite radical re-orientation of the station.

"There are cities that have had significant investment in their railway stations - Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and so on. This is Leicester's time to do this.

"The city's railway station is underperforming for us. It could work a lot harder for the city and be a much better point of arrival.

"It's a potentially impressive new gateway and there are a lot of practical advantages for the rail operator.
