Abstract
Purpose –A quantitativeobservational study was conducted. The purpose of this study is to examine the
continuing adherenceto the stopping over-medication of people withintellectual disability and/or autism
guidelines for a cohortof outpatients seen in the outpatients’ clinicsin the two teams who participated in
this study to review the trend of psychotropic prescribing with a prescription indication along with the
utilisationof non-pharmacological interventions.
Design/methodology/approach –Data was retrospectively collected over a period of one year for
patients sampled conveniently in the outpatient’s clinic. The data was collected from two sites from
psychiatric letters to the general practitioners (GPs), with the focus being psychotropic prescription
indication and their adherence to British National Formulary limits, inclusion of a widermulti-disciplinary
team or MDT (including nurses, psychologists and health support workers), use of Clinical Global
Impression(CGI) scale for assessing medication sideeffects and response to treatment.
Findings –Most of the patients had at least one reviewin the previous six months. Antipsychotics were
the highest prescribedmedications without an indicationfor their use (13.3%) followed by anxiolytics and
other medications. CGI recording was suboptimal, with 26% of the patient population did not have
medication side effectsand effectiveness monitored through this method. In total, 41%of patients were
open to communitynurses followed by other disciplines.
Originality/value –To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is anoriginal article following the pilot
study completedby the authors.

Intellectual disability (ID) is an enduring diagnosis starting early in the developmental period
and characterised by significant impairment of adaptive functioning and below average
intelligence quotient, which is two or more standard deviations below the mean scores based
on appropriately standardised tests (World Health Organisation, 2019). The term is now referr ed to
as disorders of intellectual development in the new international classification of diseases instead
of the common term “mental retardation” in previous literature (World Healt h Organisation, 1990).
The estimated prevalence of intellectual disabilities is 1%–2% in the UK (Emerson et al.,
2011). A meta-analysis of population-based studies brought the figure to as high as 10.37/
1,000 across a range of countries (Maulik et al.,2011).
People with ID are prescribed the full range of psychotropic medication to treat mental illness.
A significant proportion of this population is prescribed psychotropics, in the absence of a
