Abstract
In this article, we ex amine the mobilit y patterns of a group
of Italian young adults migrati ng to Australia in the search of
new education, labour and lifestyle opportunities. The arti-
cle represents a cont ribution to the study of t he link between
youth mobility an d unequal trajectories t hrough the elabora-
tion of a new conceptual fr amework based on the theory of
epistemologica l fallacy that point s to the growing disjunc-
ture between the e xpectations of in dividual autonomy and
the unequal distr ibution of resources to a chieve them. This
conceptual framewor k contributes to elucidate the paradox
of mobility that dri ves young people between the aspir ation
to mobility and the r eproduction of th e structural f actors
that influence their su ccess. We draw on data from a mixed
methods research project examining the mobility of Italian
young adult s to Australia. P articipants imagine d mobility as
a way of exiting insecurit ies and precarities in the ir local con-
text to a more open and m eritocratic society, but the an alysis
of their trajecto ries in the host countr y reflects similar pat-
terns of stratific ation as experienced in the contex t of origin.
