Sudanese Ahmed Bedri received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) from the UK's Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace late last year. The award was given for services to education.

Bedri and his wife Batoul were instrumental in setting up the Sudanese Supplementary School (SSS), which began as a small mother-tongue class to provide Arabic language tuition in 1991. Since those humble beginnings with 12 students, the school now has 220 and offers insights into Sudanese culture, folklore and traditional dance.
