Survey reveals pressure to behave unethically--but progress being made.

A new report says that the provision of ethical guidance for staff is increasing, although pressure to compromise on ethical standards remains a problem.

The LIMA report--"Acting under Pressure"--also sets out solutions for tackling these pressures. The report, which draws upon the 2012 CGMA survey of 1,760 CIMA students and members, reveals one in four feel working with colleagues from different functions is the most likely scenario from which pressure to act unethically may arise.

In addition, one in three CIMA students feel pressure from colleagues or managers to compromise ethical standards.

Twenty-eight per cent of students, compared to 15 per cent of members, had witnessed conduct that violated ethical codes, implying senior management may not be aware of the problem.

However, these concerns arise amid encouraging evidence that organisations are striving to uphold ethical standards.
