Suspend Brexit until we have sorted out Covid

The UK leaves the European Union in 36 days on January 1, 2021 when the transition period runs out.

Mr Sheerman, a passionate Remainer, said: "It would be madness to carry on with Brexit until we have sorted out the COVID crisis.

"Leaving the European Union will be as harmful to our economy as the whole of the COVID outbreak put together.

"I sit on the select committee for this issue under the chairmanship of Hilary Benn and have been taking evidence for months.

"It is my view that any government with a sense of leadership and responsibility would immediately suspend our leaving for as long as it takes to resolve the COVID-crisis.

"Anyone in their right mind would not inflict this on workers and companies on January 31.

"People voted to leave Europe and I am not going to stand in their way but this is about our survival as a nation.

"Suspending Brexit for six months would give us an opportunity to sort out this...
