Teenage trio are blamed for mayhem

Witnesses have claimed the fires, which were reported to police between 1am and 2.20am yesterday, were started intentionally by three teenagers'. The blazes led to a huge emergency services response in the town overnight. A picture taken by a passer-by has shown paramedics, cops and firefighters all raced to the scene in Westgate

Now, West Yorkshire Police (WYP) have confirmed officers are investigating the cause of fires in High Street and Market Street. Umar Raja, who lives in Heckmondwike, said he was disturbed by the commotion overnight and went outside to investigate. He said: "I was in my bedroom and my sister called me to say three bins were on fire outside our house.

"I went out shortly after to have a look. My neighbours then told me there was a fire at the top of the street behind a car park. Then another neighbour told me there was another fire in town. I went to have a look.

"It was three teenagers. One wearing a vest, one wearing a backpack and one wearing a balaclava.

"They started a fire opposite Sharpe Street, then Kaye Street, then in town above the 'Fone Zone', and then behind Bargain World. Then they broke into a bakery."
