Teenager helped with first steps into work

William Davidson, 18, is enjoying his full-time role as a labourer with the Hadden Group, who are constructing 31 new council houses at Northburn Avenue in the town

He found his perfect role after receiving expert advice, coaching and job taster opportunities through the supported enterprise project while still in sixth year at Buchanan High in Coatbridge.

The service helps people with disabilities and those facing challenging barriers to find work; and the work experience opportunities in a range of settings quickly showed that William's interest lay in the construction industry.

He had assistance from his school, job coach and Routes to Work to train and complete the construction skills certification scheme before beginning work, gaining his vital industry green card at the first attempt.

After receiving help from the community benefits team which is part of North Lanarkshire's housebuilding programme, the teenager then secured his successful interview with Hadden and gained the position.

William said: "I felt great when I got offered the job, and I look forward to getting up early in the morning to go to work.

"It's good to learn new and interesting facts. Getting my wages feels rewarding as I can now treat myself to the things I want, and it's amazing to be working as part of a team."
