And Stephen Robinson's last act as Motherwell manager was a clear message to the players he's leaving behind.

He'll take the fall for the Fir Park side's slump but it's up to them to get them out of it.

Robinson spoke moments after Wednesday's woeful 2-0 defeat at home to Kilmarnock.

The pretence was to look forward to tomorrow's crucial Lanarkshire derby with Hamilton. Below the surface it was the final statement of a man who had reached the end of the line.

Deciding to quit was a commendable act for a guy who has always put Motherwell first.

He could have hung around longer, hoped for a revival or waited for the board to hand out a P45.

That's how it works in the management game and Robinson knows it.

But it was the Northern Irishman who felt a change was needed for the club to get out of bother. James

McFadden claimed the gaffer had the expression of a man who didn't know what to do.

The Fir Park hero wasn't wrong. Robinson had run out of ways to get a reaction out of his players .

He's tried the carrot, swung the stick, he'd have thrown the kitchen sink at it as well if he could .

Yet nothing changed. MOTHERWELL have sunk into the habit of playing nice football at times only to be blunt up front and fold at the first sign of trouble.

The year 2020 was a stinker for everyone but especially for Well, with just six league victories in the calendar year, bumped out of both cups at the first hurdle and the latest run of nine games without a win.

Robinson has been shouting it from the rooftops since the start of the season - there are too many players at Fir Park who think they should be elsewhere.

And it was the same again in his parting shot as he practically begged the squad to have the same heart for the club as he does.

Robinson said: "I'm the one who signs the players and picks the team, so hopefully I'll be the one who takes the stick instead of them.

"But I just hope the players care as much as I and the rest of the staff - Keith Lasley, Maurice Ross, Craig Hinchcliffe and Ross Clarkson, our video analyst. The hours everyone involved puts in, I hope the players feel the same way as we genuinely care about this club.

"Some of them need to look in the mirror because they owe a lot more than they're giving.

"People have to give more and they have to find a way to win games.

"And that comes from working hard and committing 100 per cent to things."

The sad end should not take anything away from a hugely successful spell in Lanarkshire for Robinson .
