Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the current state research of cyber-physical system(CPS)
and its application in libraries. CPS is a kind of large-scale and networked system that consists of physical
and cyber elements and is currently of interest in academia, industry and government. In this survey, the
definitions, theoretical foundation and basic applications of CPS are systematically reviewed. In addition,
the development of library and current research of CPS application in library management are presented.
The vision and challenge of smart library are also discussed.
Design/methodology/approach By retrieving the main scholarly databases, the literature of CPS and its
application in libraries were examined.
Findings This study shows that a lot of CPS technology applications are still in initial stage, and explores
CPS potential impacts on libraries.
Originality/value The application of CPS in library management has not been paid much attention, this
study provides a prospective for the application of CPS in libraries.

1. Introduction
Cyber-physical system (CPS) is a new generation of digital networked embedded system that
connects the physical world to the cyber world through sensors and actuators (Esterle and
Grosu, 2016). In 2006, Helen Gill coined CPS at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the
USA. Since then, the actual term CPSwas used to describe systems that connected the
physical world with the cyber world (Lee, 2015). And NSF has awarded large amount of funds
to research on CPS from then on (Shi et al., 2011). Many universities and institutes have joined
this research area. Based on its paramount importance to societal and industrial growth, the
US Government has treated CPS as a new development strategy and a top-priority list for
federal research investment since 2007. At the same time, researchers from other countries are
beginning to realize the importance of CPS research (Xu, 2016; Zhu et al., 2014). In recent years,
many conferences and workshops on CPS have been organized, such as the CPS Week in 2008
and the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (ICCPS) in 2010
(Kim and Kumar, 2013). Currently, CPS is attracting attention in academia, industry and
government due to its potentially significant impact on society, environment and economy.
CPS has even become the core of the Industry 4.0which represents a major development
opportunity for manufacturing in the future ( Li et al., 2018; Lu, 2017b; Xu and Duan, 2018).
The use of CPS is intended to increase the implementation of large-scale systems by
improving the adaptability, autonomy, efficiency, functionality, reliability, security and
availability of such systems. Applications of CPS cover various disciplines such as
agriculture, energy, medical, manufacturing, transportation and smart environment (Wang
et al., 2007; Tan et al., 2010; Li et al., 2014). Many studies examine the current status of
research on CPS. However, a systematic and extensive review of research on application of
CPS on library management is not available. As such, the definitions, theoretical foundation
