The beautiful village 57 minutes from London that's so pretty it's been named the 'most photographed spot in England'

That title goes to Finchingfield, the chocolate box Essex village bordering Cambridge and Suffolk, and less than an hour from North East London.

Besides the colour washed cottages and views, and country pubs including Finchingfield has a rich history. It boasts the oldest windmill in Essex and its church dates back to medieval times.

Finchingfield post mill

The Grade II-listed post mill – also known as Duck End Mill and Letch’s Mill – is thought to have been built around 1756. The pair of stones and tail pole winding has been restored allowing visitors to climb up the first two floors.

Guildhall

The historic Guildhall dates back to the 15th century. It was built to house a Guild of priests and to provide a schoolroom for the boys of the village.

The Guildroom has been used for a place of learning for more than five centuries. It is now an historic venue with its own interactive museum, small shop, and library.

Great Notley Country Park

Great Notley Country Park is set in 100 acres of parkland and woodland. The park offers a 1.2km ‘play trail’.

A walking trail that leads you around the grounds equipped with -see-saw, climbing frames, tyre swings, sand pits, rope climbers, slides, zip wire, mini forts and a water play area.

Audley End Estate

The spacious grounds and estate of one of England’s grandest mansions is well worth a visit with beautiful gardens and woodlands giving a glimpse of what life was like at a Victorian country house.

Visitors can also take a steam engine through the Estate Woodland boasting hundreds of majestic trees.

Finchingfield also lays claim to some famous inhabitants, there is a blue plaque at the home once owned by the writer Dodie Smith, author of "101 Dalmatians".
