Print repositories are undergoing tremendous change as their role is not limited
anymore to a remote store for frozen collections. They innovate, reinventing
themselves, in order to be changed into a key player in streamlining the management of
printed material, especially less used materials.
The Centre technique du livre de lenseignement supérieur (CTLes) which is the
French print repository for academic and research libraries is leading this trend in
France. Emphasis here is the national context, which focuses on the need to coordinate
on the one hand acquisition policies and on the other hand a shared storage policy.
With this exact purpose in mind, the French decree no. 2014-320 was issued to
expand the perimeter of its action not only geographically but also in terms of missions .
In accordance with article 2 of the above-mentioned decree, the institution is not
anymore only a store for deposited material but from now on it intervenes in the
framework of documents delivery devices particularly through interlibrary loan
services. It is also involved in processes for mutualizing collections, especially through
shared preservation programs. It cooperates with other institutions, in France and
abroad, for the same purpose.
Though primarily intended to be used as a silo for low use printed collections, the
CTLes has become in practice a very useful lever for the French Ministry of Higher
Education and Research.
At the local level, the city and region of Paris, the CTLes is acting as a service provider
responsible for the release, in the very short term, of precious square metres of high level
general collections, sometimes very specialized and more rarely comprehensive collections.
The institution will be listed as the second major print repository library in Europe
as from September 2016. The delivery of two new buildings will increase its storage
capacity by a total of 100 linear kilometres. By then the premises will offer a total
storage capacity of 175 linear kilometres.
