The disgraced Midland cops shamed for gross misconduct

Published date23 May 2021
While all of the officers lost their jobs, some were jailed.

They include Solihull-based Pc Emerson Estridge who was jailed for having sex on duty.

Lee Tatton was also sent to prison for trying to chat up a 13-year-old boy while he was on duty.

He was also found to have dozens of pornographic images on his phone of children as young as six.

Other officers were sacked for assaulting members of the public, for sexual misconduct and for inappropriate behaviour with one officer sending 'funny' screenshots of police reports to her friends.

Here are the some of the officers sacked, and in some cases jailed, by the West Midlands Police and Staffordshire forces in the year to May 2021.

Pc Oliver Banfield

Disciplinary hearing: May 2021

Force: West Midlands Police

A West Midlands Police officer who drunkenly attacked a woman walking home alone at night would have been fired had he not already quit.

Former Pc Oliver Banfield was off-duty when he was captured on CCTV as he grabbed Emma Homer, before placing her in a headlock and kicking at her feet.

And in a damning assessment of his crime, West Midlands chief constable Sir David Thompson branded him an "immature civilian in uniform."

An accelerated misconduct hearing chaired by Sir David was told Banfield was given a community order and instructed to pay £500 in compensation after admitting the street attack at a magistrates' court hearing in March.

Ruling that Banfield, who did not attend his disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, May 18, was guilty of gross misconduct, Sir David said the use of force by the then-officer had been "wholly unnecessary and disproportionate".

How does a police misconduct hearing work

Banfield, who was not represented at the hearing, will be added to a College of Policing record to ensure he is unable to rejoin the police service.

The 25-year-old admitted a charge of assault by beating on Ms Homer, who was walking home in Bidford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, last July.

The facts of the incident and a court's decision to spare Banfield a prison term led to criticism from MP Harriet Harman.

Pc Colin Noble

Sacked: April 2021

Force: West Midlands Police

Former Pc Colin Noble was sacked in April for 'trying it on' with four domestic abuse victims.

Noble had looked at one of the woman's breasts, asking to "see what you are working with", suggested she "unbutton" her shirt, and inquired if she "had any nudes".

The officer, who had been with West Midlands Police for two...
