The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3(1) of the Geneva Conventions and United Nations Personnel (Protocols) Act 20091, makes the following Order.

1. This Order may be cited as the Geneva Conventions and United Nations Personnel (Protocols) Act 2009 (Commencement No.1) Order 2009.

2. Section 1 of the Geneva Conventions and United Nations Personnel (Protocols) Act 2009 (amendments of the Geneva Conventions Act 1957) shall come into force on 5 April 2010.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order brings into force on 5 April 2010 section 1 of the Geneva Conventions and United Nations Personnel (Protocols) Act 2009, which make certain amendments to the Geneva Conventions Act 1957. This will enable the United Kingdom to ratify the Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and Relating to the Adoption of an Additional Distinctive Emblem, of 8 December 2005.
