Latvian Police and their Activities
THE
YOUNGEST EUROPEAN POLICE FORCE

WHEN in England, in
1929,
'Scotland
Yard'
and the
,Metropolitan
Police'
were celebrating the centenary of
the London Police Force, in Latvia the Latvian Police were
commemorating the tenth anniversary of their own foundation.
The
Latvian Police Force is as old as the Republic of
Latvia, as Latvia only regained her independence after the
World War.
The
history of the Latvian Police Force is
closely bound up with that of the country itself. Both are the
records of the great energy and assiduity of one of the oldest
European nations, whose country lies on the shores of the
Baltic Sea, and an account of how these people regained and
laid the foundation of their country's independence.
The
freedom which the Letts lost in the thirteenth century, after
acentury of continual struggle, was regained by them at the
Peace of Versailles and at the cost of two years' fighting after
the World War.
We are also much indebted to England, with whose help
Latvia was enabled to strengthen her independence and estab-
lish peace, safety and order in this corner of the world, which
is one of the most important parts of Europe. It is here that
the civilized nations of Western Europe face the trouble,
anarchy, and the spirit of mutiny which are rife in Asia.
In
an article of this kind we have to limit ourselves to a short
account of Latvia and of the foundation and activities of the
Latvian Police Force, and it is therefore not possible to describe
fully to English readers all that their country has done for us,
although it would undoubtedly make very interesting reading
for them.
