Their Lordships make the following Order of Council in exercise of the powers conferred by article 1(4) of the Medical Profession (Miscellaneous Amendments) Order 20081:

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Medical Profession (Miscellaneous Amendments) Order 2008 (Commencement No. 2) Order 2009.

(2) In this Order, “the Order” means the Medical Profession (Miscellaneous Amendments) Order 2008.

2. 9th September 2009 is the day appointed for the coming into force of the following provisions of the Order—

(a) the following paragraphs of Part 2 of Schedule 1 to the Order—

(i) paragraph 11;

(ii) paragraph 15;

(iii) paragraph 16(2) in so far as it substitutes sub-section (2)(a) into section 29J of, and inserts sub-section 29J(2A) into, the Medical Act 19832;

(iv) paragraph 16(3);

(v) paragraph 16(1) in so far as it relates to the provisions mentioned in sub-paragraphs (iii) and (iv); and

(b) article 3(2) in so far as it relates to the provisions of the Order mentioned in paragraph (a) of this article.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order appoints 9th September 2009 as the day on which certain provisions of the Medical Professions (Miscellaneous Amendments) Order 2008 (“the 2008 Order”) are to come into force. These provisions amend provisions introduced to the Medical Act 1983 by SI 2002/3135. They partly introduce to the Medical Act 1983 the system of licences to practise, which will require medical practitioners to hold a licence in order to practise medicine in the United Kingdom. Other provisions in relation to the licensing system were introduced to the Medical Act 1983 by SI 2002/3135and 2006/1914.
