The most affordable place to buy a home in the UK -and it is in the North East; The list, which is dominated by County Durham, has been complied by Zoopla.

It may be the Land of the Prince Bishops, but you don't have to be royalty to afford a house in County Durham.

In fact the region has been named as the most affordable in the UK to buy a home.

Durham dominates a shortlist, compiled by property site Zoopla, of the areas with the lowest house prices.

Shildon was found to have the cheapest homes, with a property there costing just over twice the local average salary.

Ferryhill, Peterlee and Stanley all made the top ten, reports the Mirror.

Zoolpla examined the house prices in over 1,000 UK towns before comparing them to the average local wage,

"It's important for buyers or potential buyers to know where they can get the most for their money when purchasing a property," said Zoolpla property expert Tom Parker.

"With budgets tighter than usual, we want to ensure that buying a property is still attainable -even during these unprecedented times."
