COVID cases continue to rocket in Durham city centre -with one in 50 people testing positive last week.

New Government figures, published on Wednesday afternoon, shows the area has an infection rate of 1,989.9 per 100,000 people after cases more than trebled in the past week.

Similar surges have been seen in other traditionally student-heavy postcodes, such as North Jesmond.

The Newcastle suburb currently has the region's second highest infection rate 967.8, and cases have again more than trebled there in the past week.

The figures come after Newcastle's top public health official revealed that the vast majority of new infections are occurring in young, unvaccinated people.

"We know that nearly two thirds of cases in Newcastle are among the largely unvaccinated under-25 age group, and more than half are aged between 15-24," said Professor Eugene Milne, Director of Public Health for Newcastle, on Tuesday.

"We also know that these age groups account for much of the mixing that takes place, be that in schools and universities or in social settings."

However he said that just 1.4% of cases involved those aged over-65, while adding vaccines were "breaking the chain" between infection and hospitalisation.

Efforts are now being accelerated to jab younger adults ahead of the newly rescheduled 'Freedom Day' on July 19.

All over-18s can now book their first dose, while a pop-up clinic has been launched at Newcastle's Centre for Life.
