Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the role of emotional aspects in information retrieval of
PhD students from the web.
Design/methodology/ap proach From the methodological perspective, the present study is
experimental and the t ype of study is practic al. The study populati on is PhD students of var ious fields
of science. The study sam ple consists of 50 student s as selected by the strat ified purposive sampl ing
method. The informatio n aggregation is performed by observing the re cords of users facial expressions,
log file by Morae softwar e, as well as pre-search an d post-search questio nnaire. The data analys is is
performed by canonical correlation analysis.
Findings The findingsshowed that there was a significantrelationship between emotionalexpressions and
searchersindividual characteristics. Searchers satisfaction of results, frequency internet search, experience of
search, interest in the search task and familiaritywith similar searcheswere correlated with the increasedhappy
emotion. The examination of users emotionsduring searching performanceshowed that users with happiness
emotion dedicatedmuch time in searching andviewing of search solutions.More internet addresses withmore
queries were used by happy participants;on the other hand, users with anger and disgust emotions had the
lowest attempt in searchperformance to complete search process.
Practical implications The results imply that the information retrieval systems in the web should
identify emotional expressions in a set of perceiving signs in human interaction with computer, similarity,
face emotional states, searching and information retrieval from the web.
Originality/value The results explicit in the automatic identification of usersemotional expressions can
enter new dimensions into their moderator and information retrieval systems on the web and can pave the
way of design of emotional information retrieval systems for the successful retrieval of users of the network.

Introduction
There is enough evidence in modern psychology to verify the influence of positive/negative
moods on the process of perception. Bower (1992) did many studies illustrating the ways in
which different situations create specific moods and also how these moods, in turn, affect the
information processing system.Bower noted that people with positivemoods tend to express
positive experiences. These people spendmore time coding the information that correlates to
their moods (Isenand Reeve, 2005; Miller et al., 2006;Park and Lim, 2007; Lopatovska,2009a,
b; Um et al., 2011). A look at the literature in this area indicatesthat different disciplines have
in their special ways addressed the issue of emotions and feelings, including psychology,
management, engineering and computersciences (Lopatovska, 2009a,b; Yari Zanganeh et al.,
2016). However, emotions are most widely studied in psychology (Goleman, 1995; Erez and
Isen, 2002; Norman, 200 4; Um et al., 2011).
Affective or emotional aspects have been considered in library and information sciences,
and humancomputer interaction too(Yari Zanganeh et al., 2016). Emotionplays a key role in
