ABSTRACT
The paper
considers cases
which indicate
both the
controls exercised
by
the Statutory
Committee
of the
Royal
Pharmaceutical
Society
of
Great
Britain
over
the profession
of
pharmacy
through
its
powers
to
hold
inquiries into
allegations
or
conviction
of
misconduct,
and the
limitations
of the
power
of
the Statutory
Committee.
INTRODUCTION
The Pharmacy
Act 1954 s. 7
pro-
vided
for the
appointment
of a
Statutory Committee
of the
Pharma-
ceutical Society
of
Great Britain
(now
the
Royal Pharmaceutical
Society
of
Great Britain)
and
pro-
vided that
the
Statutory Committee
should have control over registra-
tion
of
pharmaceutical chemists
(no
person
is
entitled
to
practice
as a
pharmaceutical chemist
in
Great
Britain unless
he is on the
register
of
the Society).
The
Statutory Commit-
tee consists
of six
members, five
of
them appointed
by the
governing
body
of the
Society,
the
Council, with
a chairman appointed
by the
Privy
Council.
The
chairman must
be a
person having professional legal
experience;
the
other members need
not
be
pharmaceutical chemists,
but
in practice
are, and at
least
one of
them must
be
resident
in
Scotland.1
The jurisdiction
of the
Commit-
tee extends
to
persons applying
to
have their name registered,
to
regis-
tered pharmaceutical chemists
or
their employees,
or
persons
who
have been removed from
the
