Judges have handed out a range of punishments ranging from lengthy prison sentences to community orders for the offences.

From charges of attempted murder to grievous bodily harm and stalking, these are the men sentenced for terrorising their partners and former lovers atNewcastle Crown Courtin 2019 so far this year.

Samuel Ford and his partner had a "toxic" short relationship which left her feeling anxious and in fear due to his controlling and coercive behaviour.

The pair had met in student accommodation but Ford's personality would change after consuming cocaine.

In one episode, she was left with an injury to her shoulder after Ford pulled her back from climbing out of a second floor window to escape.

On another occasion, police found her in a dishevelled state inAshington on the roadside after another row.

Officers took her home toBykerbut Ford and his friend then turned up, forced entry and she was left feeling trapped and terrified for two hours.

During the ordeal, he shoved his fingers down her throat, causing scratches to its lining. She was shouting for help and a neighbour called police, which brought the incident to an end.

Ford, 24, of Castle Terrace, Ashington, pleaded guilty to controlling or coercive behaviour and criminal damage to her phone.

Judge Julie Clemitson sentenced him to a community order with 200 hours of unpaid work and a three year restraining order.

This thug punched, kicked, bit and stamped on his girlfriend during a brutal beating - then made her look at her injuries in the mirror.

Robert McGowan left his victim fearing for her life when he held a knife to her throat during the harrowing attack in her own home.

The court heard the 'horrendous and sustained assault' saw McGowan drag his partner across the living room by her hair and pour lager over her head.

Even when the woman managed to flee to her mother's house, he continued his rampage by throwing paint all over her walls, sofa and television.

McGowan, of Rose Street,Gateshead, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

The 36-year-old was jailed for 31 months after a judge said he 'saw no mitigating factors in this case whatsoever'.

A friend of a woman murdered by her stalker ex-boyfriend was told she "could have been like her" by her violent former partner - who strangled her unconscious before threatening to kill her cat.

The victim had been pals with tragic Alice Ruggles, who was savagely murdered by obsessed soldier Trimaan Dhillon.

Emery, of Hall View, Howden-le-Wear,County Durham,who has no previous convictions, admitted assault and sending malicious communication.

Judge Julie Clemitson sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with rehabilitation requirements, a 12-month evening curfew and a five-year restraining order.

Jilted ex-boyfriend Mark Millsip bombarded his former partner with 200 threatening messages in one day before going round to her house with a knife.

Months after their relationship broke down, Millsip sent his frightened victim a flood of messages including "you are dead tonight" and "I've paid a lad to slash you".

The court heard he then turned up at her home, "shouting and swearing", before picking up a brick and walking down the side of the property.
