An accountancy firm that used to provide tax services to us, in particular preparing the corporation tax figures, will this year be auditing our statutory accounts. As the firm can no longer prepare the tax figures, I have been asked by my MD to prepare them instead, at very short notice, with guidance from the auditors.

I have made it clear that I do not have the expertise to do this, nor do I feel able to evaluate their advice, and would rather that an expert, not related to the auditors, undertake this work. My MD still insists I prepare the figures for her to sign off.

Our response:

Section 330, acting with sufficient expertise, requires that "a professional accountant in business only undertakes significant tasks for which (the professional accountant) has, or can, obtain specific training or experience". A further threat in this context would be having "insufficient time for properly performing or completing the relevant duties". You are right to consider...
