Abstract
In the past years, i ncreasingly restrictive migr ation policies
have p ushed many migrants to seek new and more r isky
migration routes. Many studies have investigated aspect s
of social protection for mig rants from the Global South in
industrialized count ries of the Global North, with powerful
welfare states. Yet, such focus has failed to underst and the
complexities during the migration process, where pe ople
often sp end uncertain periods of tim e in transit countries
and the state is frequent ly absent. In these contexts, social
protection is pr edominantly pr ovided by the thi rd sector
(TS) and informal n etworks both nation ally and transna-
tionally. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted with
African migrants and TS organizations in Mexico, this paper
explores t he different and often semi- formal relationships
between the TS, the state, and the migrants that result in
complex transnational social protection infrastructures to
cover the migrants' basic s ocial protection needs.
