The UK's Department of Transport has commissioned a study to investigate whether overhead wires can be used to power long-distance trucks in the nation.

A consortium headed by construction and engineering group, Costain will conduct the study. Companies including Scania and Siemens Mobility are part of the consortium. The move is part of the government's effort to reduce the transportation sector's carbon footprint. The plan is to harness Siemens Mobility's 'eHighway' technology, which uses overhead lines to provide trucks with electricity.
