The Russian invasion of Ukraine in
February this year, created a new
North Atlantic Europe stretching
from the Black Sea to Washington’s
Potomac River. It reminded Europe's
national leaders that military security is just
as important as economic security – and
that the chief guarantor of the territory of
European states, the North Atlantic Treaty
Organisation (NATO), relies on the United
States government.

of security resources based on geography,
military forces and political trust. The war in
Ukraine does not increase the size of these
assets but it does make them more relevant
to the defence of North Atlantic Europe.
The oshore position of Britain leaves it
safe from the threat of invasion by land that
is faced by more than half a dozen European
