IF you recall that your eyes are not sensitive to heat-rays,
or to X-rays or even to radio waves which are all about us,
you will not be surprised that there are other waves of energy
from the sun or from artificial sources which also send invisible
rays into space.
The
most popular invisible rays with which
we should be acquainted are the ultra-violet rays.
The
news-
papers have been telling us about these ultra-violet waves for
health, and we have been advised to take natural summer sun
baths in order to get the health advantage of the vital, sun
burning rays, which also act on the body to protect the teeth
and bones of pregnant women, and which act to further the
growth of the bones of babies.
Artificial sources of the vital ultra-violet abound in clinics,
hospitals, and doctors' offices. When these are operating
normally, the emission consists of a conglomeration of heat
rays (invisible), light rays (visible), and ultra-violet rays (in-
visible). We must protect the eyes against the rays of invisible
ultra-violet because they cause inflammation of the eye.
Ordinary glass acts to protect the eyes; and in fact, if ordinary
glass is placed between the apparatus and the skin, there would
be no sunburn, because the ordinary glass cuts off the vital
ultra-violet.
In
order to get the ultra-violet without any visible light,
one uses a new glass filter which is dark violet or purple.
The
filter prevents most of the visible light from coming through,
