INTRODUCTION
During the last 30 years, most cou ntries aroun d the wor ld have ex perienced ra pid digitizatio n in alm ost every
aspect of society and daily life. This holds, for inst ance, as much true for communication behaviour (e.g. using mes-
senger servi ces and video chat) as for news consumptio n (e.g. online newspapers and soc ial networking sites) and
the way we keep ourse lves entertained (e.g . streaming music and vide o content or reading the lates t eBook). The
number of a ppliances that are becoming “smart ” increases stea dily, and a multitud e of sensors has become daily
companions of many people, be they incor porated in pho nes, wristwatch es or fitness gadgets. An ever- growing
amount of dat a is continuously generated by and c ollected through all of the aforemen tioned. The potent ial this
digitiz ation and big data hold for re search in man y fields and th e multitude of challenge s associated w ith their sci-
entific use have beco me focal points of inquir y and discussion. In migrati on research, this is not only vis ible in the
increasing oc currence of dedicate d conference sessions , workshops and sum mer schools but also in the growing
number of corresponding methods- oriented publications (e.g. McAuliffe, 2021; Pötzschke & Rinken, forthcoming;
Sandberg et al ., 2022; Tjaden, 2021).
RELEVANCE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES FOR
MIGRATION RESEARCH
In terms of data collection , Social Network ing Sites (SNS)1 seem sp ecifically interesting for migration scholars.
First, they allow migrants to connect and stay connected with individuals, be it other migrants, people left be-
hind in their cou ntry of origin or contac ts in their envisione d target country dur ing the migration proces s itself.
