A competitive nature (36 per cent) and leadership skills (25 percent) have come out top in a survey of what attributes are required for corporate success.

According to the research, which was carried out by Robert Half Financial Services and involved talking to more than 1,000 chief financial officers In ten countries, 68 per cent of UK CFOs said they planned to Increase salaries for permanent accounting and finance staff in the first half of 2012.

This optimism, however, is falling behind Switzerland (84 per cent), but is on a par with China (68 per cent) and ahead of Japan (57 per cent) and Singapore (57 per cent).

Other key findings include:

* the average UK salary increase within the finance and accounting department is expected to be 5.7 per cent
