Why British
Conservatives Should
be Worried About the
Australian Election Results
British Conservatives would do well to look at the recent experience
of the Liberal Party of Australia if they want to avoid the electoral
fate that befell their Australian sister party earlier this year, write
Ben Wellings and Zareh Ghazarian.
In May 2022, Australians voted for
change. The Coalition government,
made up of the centre-right Liberal and
National parties, was voted out after nine
years in oce. The Australian Labor Party
(ALP) formed a new government, winning 77
of the 151 seats in the Australian parliament.
Seats were also gained by the Australian
Greens and independent MPs who together
won over 10 per cent of seats in the lower
house.
Australia’s recent election results were not
only bad news for incumbent Prime Minister
Scott Morrison’s Liberal party – they also
should have British Conservatives worried.
Like Australian Liberals, the Conservatives
have dominated politics for the past decade.
