Windfarm helps generate funds for local groups

Muirhall Energy is working on the development, located between Greengairs and Caldercruix at a site north of Easterton on Airdrie Road; and will make awards of up to £2500 to groups from those villages and nearby Plains, Upperton and Longriggend

Successful applicants can spend the money on projects ranging from improvements to facilities and the environment to creating jobs and training opportunities.

The Greengairs East development will have eight turbines of 150 metres in height and which will be able to generate a combined 36 megawatts of electricity; with the company saying it will be able to produce sufficient power to supply 32,000 homes. As well as the newly-launched initial investment fund, the developers will set up a community investment fund when construction is complete, distributing £192,000 annually to local projects throughout the windfarm's 25-year lifespan.

Forms to apply to the current fund can be downloaded from the project webpage, with applications being accepted until August 19 or earlier if "all funds have been distributed".

Muirhall Energy communities coordinator Debbie Bridges explained: "The establishment of this fund will be to the benefit of local groups and we are excited to see the applications roll in.
