Woman, 26, transforms 'worn, smelly' home into 'electric' paradise for £100 a room

Kirsty, who has picked up more than 1,000 followers for her decor skills on Instagram, described her home as an “electric mix with bursts of colours”.

She said: “When I moved in, the property was a typical ex- rental property, structurally sound, but a sea of magnolia and worn, smelly carpets.

“I’ve tried to inject my personality into my home.”

Using DIY tips, renovating old items and buying second-hand furniture, Kirsty managed to overhaul the entire home on a budget.

The 26-year-old added: “Living by myself has meant I’ve needed to decorate on a budget and stretch my limited DIY skills to make the most of the space.

“With the help of my very handy mum, we’ve avoided getting expensive decorators or tradespeople to save money.

“To name a few, I’ve recycled scaffolding boards to make shelves, painted kitchen cupboards instead of recycling, upcycled a salvaged fire surround, used discounted office flooring to revamp the bathroom, handmade curtains and upcycled tired-looking furniture.”

Despite having “limited” DIY skills, Kirsty has managed to redecorate her home to a high standard.

“I’d love to take all the credit for the upholstery work, but I really couldn’t have done it without my mum.

“It’s a great low-cost way to freshen up a sturdy piece of furniture, I love the pink trim!”

Despite her bedroom’s expensive look, Kirsty said: “The bedroom is probably where I’ve spent the least.

“Probably under £100, excluding the bed and frame, as the fireplace, armchair and dressing table were all salvaged and upcycled.”

Renovating or 'upcycling' furniture became more popular in 2021 as many Brits wanted to save money and still revamp their home.

Furniture retailer Swyft Home predicts this trend will carry on into 2022.

Kirsty explained that Instagram is her go-to place to find inspiration for her home decor.
