some drastic changes for the status
and inclusion of women in the
political arena. The presence of
women in national parliaments has increased
from a global average of 12 per cent in the
lower house in 1997 to slightly over a quarter
in 2023, according to the Inter-Parliamentary
Union Data. Not only has the descriptive
representation of women in politics grown,

political world in which female leaders are often held to different
standards to their men counterparts, writes Shan-Jan Sarah Liu.
but positive discussions about women’s
leadership have also taken place, especially
since the Covid pandemic. The international
press praised several women heads of states
for the way they handled the global health
emergency. Scotland’s Nicola Sturgeon,
New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern, Taiwan’s Tsai
Ing-Wen, Denmark’s Mette Frederiksen, and
Finland’s Sanna Marin, were widely seen as
having led their countries to better pandemic
outcomes than their male equivalents.
