A word from the president: 'integrated reporting has cropped up in conversations everywhere I've been'.

After visiting 24 countries, meeting thousands of members and students, and attending some spectacular events, I've come to the end of my presidential term. The past 12 months have disappeared in a flash, but one thing will stay with me for a while: when it comes to training professionals, CIMA is talking the language that business wants to hear.

During my travels I met many businesses leaders who provided ample confirmation that CIMA is leading the field in redefining accounting and demonstrating the essential role that our members are equipped to play in meeting the myriad commercial challenges of today and tomorrow.

The institute's recent research into how management accounting can help to promote the value of big data, integrated reporting (IR) and business models has been particularly appreciated. In fact, IR has cropped up in conversations everywhere I've been in the past year. As a resident of South Africa, I have seen my adopted home become the first country to make IR a regulatory requirement for all listed companies. This is a huge achievement and I believe that it's accelerating the development of IR considerably.

Thanks to CIMA's extensive research into IR, I have been incorporating this ground-breaking concept into my work as a consultant for some time. I often use the balanced scorecard as a way of introducing companies to the primary concept of integrated thinking. Too many organisations fail to take into account the techniques from the scorecard that they need in order to gain momentum. But, once they start to think in an integrated way, they soon see the significant value it brings. This then smooths the transition from integrated thinking to integrated reporting.

I have also received fantastic feedback from business leaders in the consultation on the proposed CGMA global management accounting principles.
