The Value Added Tax (Change of Rate) Order 2008

Coming into force 1st December 2008
The Treasury make the following Order in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 2(2) and 21(7) of the Value Added Tax Act 19941:
1. This Order may be cited as the Value Added Tax (Change of Rate) Order 2008 and comes into force on 1st December 2008.
The Value Added Tax Act 1994 shall be amended as follows.
2. The Value Added Tax Act 1994 shall be amended as follows.
3. In section 2(1) (rate of VAT)2, the rate of tax charged by virtue of that section shall be decreased by 142/7 per cent.
4. In section 21(4) (value of imported goods)3for “28.58” substitute “33.34”.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order, which comes into force on 1st December 2008, reduces the rate of Value Added Tax by 142/7 percent to effect a reduction from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent and makes a consequential change to the Value Added Tax Act 1994. This Order will have effect from 1st December 2008 to 30th November 2009.
